La Crêperie

Paris France

I first visited this restaurant in 2019

Ambience

It felt like it was busy and wanted to rush people through and get rid of them as fast as they could.

The service was nothing special. We were also put behind a column so it was impossible to get anyone’s attention.

Price

The prices were fine, 12 € for a lunch menu in Paris is good, however it is expensive for just crêpes.

Most of the restaurant was well laid out, however there were some tables that were inconveniently placed (e.g. behind columns).

Space

The crêpes were well cooked however the contents were not the most flavoursome, they urgently needed seasoning.

Taste

There was a large number of sweet and savoury crêpes as well as other things to try.

A large number of them were vegetarian, and there were also a large number of salad options.

The “Andalouse” lacked flavour (apart from the Chorizo of course) which I felt didn’t really put potato in the best light, which was disappointing.

The Coconut Tree

Oxford United Kingdom

I first visited this restaurant in 2018

Ambience

There was a really chill vibe as soon as you walk in, with hanging lamps casting a lovely orange light around the room.

The service was really good and our server was really helpful in guiding us around the menu and making recommendations for us.

The prices are generally good and, because it is a sort of tapas-style, you can try a lot for less, however it builds up quickly as you try more and more (and you will want to!).

The restaurant is really well laid out and the decor reflects the street food theme of the restaurant.

The food was incredible, with flavours that will blow you away. Every dish hit exactly where it should.

There is a large range of items on the menu, with a variety of meats, fishes, and spice levels, laid out easily to see on the menu.

The majority of the dishes are vegetarian, including the “legendary” hoppers, however the best dishes are the ones with meat in.

The potato spring was a great dish with loads of flavour and the thin cutting of the potato made it beautifully crispy – something to fight over.

Pieman

Dublin Ireland

I first visited this restaurant in 2019

Ambience

The small restaurant felt cozy and homely and the smell just made sure you’d never forget that!

There was only one lady behind the counter and yet we were never left waiting, queues subsided quickly, and when we were done things were cleared away without delay.

The prices were really reasonable and, with student discount, became really good value.

Being quite small, the tables were long with benches and so we had to share tables and sometimes it got a bit cramped. There also only seemed to be one salt/pepper cellar per table.

The stout pie with gravy tasted incredible: the beef was so tender and flavoursome, and the vegetables just perfect, combining for an unforgettable Irish experience.

Being a pie shop, they mainly sold pies, although there were also 4 types of sausage roll to go with the 6 different pies to choose from.

There was not much choice for vegetarians, only one pie – feta and sweet potato.

Natural Kitchen

London United Kingdom

I first visited this restaurant in 2019

The restaurant had a nice chilled out vibe and it was busy without being overcrowded.

The service was pretty good: we didn’t have to wait too long for anything.

The prices were a bit expensive, however that is expected in London.

The decor and large floor-to-ceiling windows meant that it felt very open, but the tables were sometimes laid out in a way that was hard to get around.

Falafel Tof

Antwerp Belgium

I first visited this restaurant in 2018

The place was really lively and, although it was busy, it was never too crowded.

Because the food were made to order and there was a lot of salad options, the queue was very long.

It was really good value for money however the portions were too big and so often a lot was left behind.

There was a really nice outside area and the furniture was of interesting shapes, but sometimes people would have to push past people and through tables because of where they were in relation to the doors

The Souvlaki Brothers

Oxford United Kingdom

The people behind the counter are really nice and friendly but, because it is made to order in front of you, it can be slow at busy times.

The prices are really good and the value is brilliant as the souvlaki comes close to bursting.

It’s a really nice aesthetic, however there is very limited seating so you almost always have to take away.

The souvlaki is brilliant, no matter which of the fillings you go for, they’re always stuffed full of flavour. It makes the inevitable mess down your front worth it!

Taste

The fries with the spice mix are great, however they would be better if they were coated in the spice mix (maybe mixed in a big bowl) rather than just sprinkled over so only the top gets it.

Boojums

Dublin Ireland

I first visited this restaurant in 2019

Ambience

Boojums is a fast food franchise and it feels like it, but it is a welcoming one.

The service was fine, and they were willing to give us advice, but making burritos takes time so the queue could get really long.

The prices are good for Dublin, especially if you get student discount, as it can basically get you a free drink too

They were relatively well laid out, however there was nothing particularly special from a normal fast food franchise.

The main fillings themselves were incredibly flavourful, especially the spiced chicken. However, a lot of the best items, needed for the best flavour combinations, were only additional extras.

Kazbar

All of the doors are counter-balanced with vases and guitars, which is fun as you enter the restaurant, where it is really chill and with real Middle Eastern vibes.

The prices aren’t cheap unless you during the half price period where it is incredibly good.

The rooms are filled with Moroccan decor and the tables and chairs are themed too. There is incense burning and it’s really easy to enjoy as a restaurant.

Kiln

London United Kingdom

I first visited this restaurant in 2019

Ambience

1.0

Everyone is sat around the food preparation area meaning you can see the open kiln.

The service is great once you get a seat – friendly, helpful, attentive. But as is classic for London, you cannot book so you can be waiting for over 2 hours.

Service

0.5

Price

The prices are good, especially for central London, and very economical if you share with friends to try everything.

I love the space concept, but sometimes you can get buffeted by people leaving, and it can get too hot down the kiln end and too cold by the door end.

Space

The food is incredible. The menu changes, but always tastes great. Sometimes a tasty item (like the soy chicken) can be overwhelmed by how tasty other items are, but it is all just perfect.

The menu is short, but every dish is completely different (fish, beef, lamb, pork, chicken, vegetarian, hogget – which I recommend entirely) so there is always an option for everyone.

L’Assiette aux Fromages

Paris France

I first visited this restaurant in 2019

Ambience

The ambience was relatively chill, with lots of cheese paraphanalia, posters, and fitting music. The concept of raclette is fun too – you melt cheese on little personal stoves and then pour the melty cheese over your dish.

The service was really fast, verging on too fast, as I was seated quickly and the food was ready minutes after I had ordered.

Service

Price

The prices were expensive for what it was: a bit of salad, some blocks of cheese, and three potatoes.

The restaurant was long and thin and yet the tables were laid out well so you never had to push past any.

The classic “Raclette” wasn’t good. The cheese wasn’t very flavoursome (disappointing for a restaurant that specialises in it) and the potatoes needed seasoning.
